Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases are those caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Common infections include pneumonia, meningitis, diarrhea, hepatitis, influenza, tuberculosis, Lyme disease, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. The pharmaceutical treatment always depends on the pathogen responsible and is supplemented by therapies to boost the patient’s immune system. A core focus of our therapies for infectious diseases is the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

HIV became an epidemic in the early 1980s and has since resulted over 41 million human lives lost. An infection with HIV destroys the immune system and, if left untreated, results in AIDS, with life-threatening infections and tumors. To this day there is no cure for HIV. Modern pharmacotherapies can, however, reduce the viral load in the body and thus prevent the development of AIDS. Thanks to long-term medication, people with HIV now have good chances of a normal life expectancy and quality of life.
